Neighborhoods ➤Houston Barnard Tract Life
Houston Barnard Beauty
Houston Barnard is breathtaking year round. In the summer, view a rainbow of perennial gardens, emerald-lush lawns, birds and butterflies. With the changing of the seasons in time for Halloween, leaves turn harvest colors on tree-lined, lamp-lit streets as shrubs burst with hot reds and chartreuse. Thanksgiving reminds residents to plan for winter holidays when neighbors walk dogs on snow-plowed sidewalks watching holiday decorations pop up midst newly formed snowmen. Spring is dazzling as pink and yellow buds blossom and deer, ducks, hawks visit. Rochester’s renowned architects are represented in this myriad of styles and periods which blend seamlessly enmeshed in luscious landscapes. Action returns for walkers, joggers, bikers and roller bladers. Most beautiful of all are the friendships and soulful connections built over the years.
The Houston Barnard Tract encompasses Ambassador Drive, Sandringham Road, Elm Lane, Georgian Court Road, Trevor Court Road and Esplanade Drive (east of Clover Street).
To learn more about the Houston Barnard Subdivision, which encompasses Grosvenor Road, Pelham Road and Council Rock Avenue, bordered by Highland Avenue to the south and East Avenue to the northeast, visit our Houston Barnard Subdivision page.
Community Spirit
The Houston Barnard Neighborhood Association’s mission is “to ensure that the Houston Barnard Neighborhood continues to be a safe, beautiful and friendly place in which we all love to live.” It welcomes newcomers and brings neighbors together for a festive, annual potluck picnic. Games, face painting, henna, volleyball, bouncy houses and a selection of other activities abounds: fun for everyone!
Residents who like to connect, do so through the neighborhood Directory, which the Columbus family designed for over a decade, as well as through the Houston Barnard Facebook page. The Garden Lover’s Club (GLC) offers another opportunity to get together during winter months. Community Spirit & Covid-19
Adventuresome HB neighbors expressed their creativity, friendship and community spirit in April of 2020 by painting trees via this social distancing art project. Families bonded together to deliver colorful Basquiat, Rothkoesque and graffiti-like looks to the neighborhood.
The social distancing community art project brings hope and love via trees wrapped in cellophane with colorful spray paint. Jamie Columbus and her family offered art materials to neighbors who were interested in taking part in the project.

In the Neighborhood
The tangible value of sustaining a warm sense of community is beautifully expressed in a book by Peter Lovenheim, In The Neighborhood, which focuses specifically on families within the Houston Barnard footprint.
Experience the author’s observations and celebration of connecting with his neighbors. Jamie Columbus’ views on the Houston Barnard community are expressed in Chapter 5, “No Bed, No Breakfast.”
Love Letters
Jamie went right to work and found the perfect home for us. The house was not even actively listed for sale at the time but she knew of it and made it a possibility by working through her connections and knowledge of the (Houston Barnard) neighborhood. Since we’ve moved, Jamie has continued to be a resource to us for matters home maintenance and repair as well as helping us get acquainted with the neighbors and neighborhood.
We have known Jamie Columbus for thirty years and have worked with her several times on Ambassador Drive and in the area. She is both creative and pragmatic, a very dynamic business person who cares incredibly for her clients. She has guided us through very difficult negotiations and hung in there when times were tough. She has found the right buyers for us by marketing our homes perfectly and giving us great advice to make our sales possible. She is a very proactive advocate for her sellers and her buyers. She is always honest and will never steer you in the wrong direction.
Having been in the real estate business for over 40 years, I can recognize someone with a keen eye for detail, a splendid capacity for follow through, and lots of common sense. Jamie is hard to beat. During my transactions with her, I was both impressed and pleased with how she navigated the process. Her ability to communicate is one of her strongest assets. In my long real estate career, I have never worked with better.
